At Vijana Heavens Foundation, we are dedicated to empowering orphans and underprivileged children in the slum communities to improve their living and take advantage of economic opportunities through education. Education equals to opportunities, but for many children where we work, a good education seems out of reach. Without it, opportunities become scarcer and the poverty cycle becomes more inevitable. Our desire as an organization, is to ensure that every child regardless of their background or ability have access to an education that set them up for a positive future.
In the slum communities of Nansana, a suburb 20 minutes from Kampala, over 100,000 school-aged children struggle to read or even recognize letters of the alphabet, even after attending the foundational lower primary level. Many children as young as five are out of school due to poverty. To address this, Vijana Heavens Foundation mobilized support from friends and partners to create a supportive, child-friendly learning environment where children without access to formal schooling can learn to read, count, and write. Our goal is to prepare them for enrollment in school as soon as resources allow.
This year, we were blessed to receive boxes of both friction and non-friction books from African Library Project (ALP), an organization that mobilizes volunteers in North America to collect and donate gently used books to empower small libraries in English-speaking countries in Africa. These books are helping our children learn to read, discover new words, understand their meanings, and use them in sentences. This enriches their comprehension, enabling them to perform better in standardized exams and remain in school.
