Sports for Development

At Vijana Heavens Foundation, we recognize the critical role of physical literacy and motor skills in a child’s development. These skills are not only essential for success in sports but are also fundamental to everyday life.

Sports for Development

At Vijana Heavens Foundation, we recognize the critical role of physical literacy and motor skills in a child’s development. These skills are not only essential for success in sports but are also fundamental to everyday life.

The Challenge

Children in slum communities face significant barriers to participating in sports, including lack of safe play spaces, poverty, poor health, limited access to education, and gender inequality. Many are burdened with responsibilities or exposed to violence, leaving them with little time or support for recreational activities. These challenges prevent them from accessing the physical, emotional, and social benefits that sports can offer.

How We Help

Participation in sports builds leadership skills both on and off the field. Our comprehensive youth programs include;

Soccer in Streets

We organize recreational soccer leagues that bring the joy of the game to neighborhoods across slum communities of Kampala, where children participate and learn valuable skills while giving back to the game.

Girls in the Game

We tackle gender inequality in sports to inspire and empower girls to break down gender barriers in sports in their own communities. Participation in sports builds leadership skills both on and off the field.

Sports for WASH

We develop, train and implement physical activities which combine fun, play and health education to raise awareness on key health issues and the practices of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

Skills Development

We integrate play in all our programs to enable children and young people to participate confidently and competently in various activities, setting them up for a lifetime of health, fitness, and success in their personal and athletic pursuits.

Sheilah Nakatte

programs manager

Sheilah is a servant leader who is passionate about creating a world where every child regardless of his/her background has equal access to quality education. Growing up in desperate poverty, Sheilah had limited access to education, even though her single mother tried to find some piece of work of selling vegetables on the roadside, her monthly income couldn’t stretch enough to provide all the needs of her six poor children including paying their school fees on time. When Sheilah got a chance to step in class, she put all her effort to learning and be the best in her class and was able to get a full bursary as the best student every term which reduced on the risk of being sent back home for school fees which increased her chances of having a brighter future through education. After successfully completing high school, Sheilah decided to dedicate her time to help children struggling in their studies to catch up in math and literacy.
