Despite the proven benefits of early learning, 4 out of 10 children aged between 3 and 6 years in Uganda are not enrolled in formal pre-primary education today yet education is proven to be the key for children to achieve their full development potential. Though reading is fundamental, it’s very challenging to have only 2 out of 5 children aged 10 years in the slum communities where we work who can read and complete a sentence on their own.
This literacy challenge in our community inspired Vijana Heavens Foundation to set up a child – friendly learning space at our center to support young children from poverty-stricken families who have not got a chance to go to school, to have access to basic skills in reading, writing and counting before it’s too late for them to catch up as we mobilize support to take them to a real formal school.
This program is designed to not only foster academic growth but also to promote social-emotional development, creativity, and critical thinking skills. We integrate hands-on learning experiences, play-based activities, and opportunities for exploration to engage and inspire our young learners.
